One of the city’s top annual wine gatherings is back in its seventh year – from May 24 to 26, Vinexpo will again open its doors at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The three-day event brings together winemakers, distributors, merchants and experts from across the globe. Aside from all the wine to sample, the fun includes master classes, seminars, guided tastings, contests and gala dinners.
More than 1,300 international exhibitors representing 34 countries are set to take part. This year’s featured country is Italy and the highlighted grape varietal is Shiraz. French oenophiles can also scour the vast terroirs, from the Rhône Valley (at the Inter Rhône booth) to the Languedoc region. Those who love the classic sensations of Bordeaux would be wise to enrol in the grand cru master classes with French wine magnate Bernard Magrez. Among the other big names in attendance will be Debra Meiburg, a Master of Wine; Andreas Larsson, who was named World’s Best Sommelier in 2007; and Jean-Guillaume Prats, the president of Moët Hennessy Estates and Wines.
The new world is also well-represented – explore lesser-known regions through events such as the Greek Wine Master Class as well as the Chilean Amayna wine dinner at the W hotel. Another unique event features the 2013 World’s Best Sommelier, Paolo Basso, who will outline the similarities between fine wine and coffee in collaboration with Nespresso. And if you’ve ever dreamt of joining the ranks of these spectacular wine producers, attending The Keys to Your Own Winery seminar is a must.
