Going on a safari can be a bit daunting for novices, especially with countless options on hand. What do you pack? When and where do you go? How do you make the most out of your holiday? Lucky for us, Alice Gully, founder of Aardvark Safaris – experts in organising bespoke holidays to East Africa – is on hand to answer our most pressing questions.
HJ: What are essential items that should be in every safari-goer’s suitcase?
AG: A pair of binoculars for each person; a camera with spare memory cards and batteries; a wide-brimmed hat that protects your face and neck from the scorching sun; a good book and a fleece jumper for chilly mornings and after the sun sets.
HJ: What’s a typical day like on safari?
AG: Most safaris start early so you see the animals when they’re the most active. Then the afternoons are dedicated to relaxation, due to the heat – this is the time to tan by the pool, enjoy a nice meal and watch elephants and hippos bathe in the watering holes. When it cools down in the afternoon and the animals get more active again, you’ll head off on a drive, a bush walk or a boat trip. Most safaris end with a sundowner in a stunning location.
HJ: What are some nice side trips after a South African safari?
AG: From Sabi Sand Game Reserve, it’s a short flight to see Victoria Falls. Cape Town is also within an hour’s flight away, and you can explore the city or head out to the Cape Winelands for brilliant wines and incredible food!
HJ: Why is South Africa a good choice for first-timers?
AG: It has some of the best wildlife areas in Africa, and you’re guaranteed to see all the Big Five. And for those that need the comforts of home, the safari lodges are some of the very best while the South African rand makes everything very affordable. Plus, there are areas that are totally malaria-free so it’s safe for children. And to top things off, there are direct flights from Hong Kong!
