We celebrated our 35th anniversary by staging a three-day pop-up exhibition, At Home in Hong Kong, at the Liang Yi Museum last October. Our exhibition kicked off with a cocktail party attended by many of Hong Kong’s top designers, creatives and industry professionals.
The exhibition spanned three distinct areas: the Past zone, curated by Antony Chan, chairman of the Hong Kong Interior Design Association and the founder and creative director of Cream, looked back at previous issues while highlighting key design trends from the 1980s to present. The Present area showcased inspirational pieces from the homes of notable creatives, including an antique chair from Cantopop star Hins Cheung, a tabletop decorative box from Vicky Lau, and artwork from architect and founder of theWanderlister+, JJ. Acuña. The Future section attempted to answer the question How will we live 20 years from now?”. Thirty-five local and international design luminaries, including Hong Kong’s André Fu , Douglas Young and Steve Leung, as well as international stars such as Paola Navone, Sebastian Herkner and Kenneth Cobonpue, shared their forecasts for the future of design in Hong Kong and beyond.

Aimed at celebrating homegrown creative endeavours, the event also hosted a screening of Designers Inbetween – a documentary by Jonathan Ramalho and Oliver Lehtonen that chronicles Hong Kong’s burgeoning design scene. NarrativeHK co-founder Ken Wong also headed an engaging discussion, titled Building a creative city: the Hong Kong story, which examined how the city and local governments can support the growth of creative industries.

International design brands participated in the event by displaying wares in the exhibition. Surface material purveyor Challenge Pacific provided sturdy, custom-made wooden display placques for thePast zone, alongside plush fabrics from Bed&Bath. Visitors could also admire a range of furnishings up close, including a handsome bespoke leather trunk kitted out with Miele appliances (made in collaboration with Timothy Oulton), a playful Up5 armchair and pouf by Gaetano Pesce for B&B Italia and striking Florian armchairs in rich, rainbow hues from Roche Bobois. Guests were also invited to document the moment at Venture Studios’ on-site photo studio.
