One of the world’s largest and most reputable art events, Art Basel is returning to Hong Kong from May 27 to 29. Here’s what to expect.
Scheduled to take place from May 27 to 29, Art Basel Hong Kong 2022 Edition will feature 137 galleries from 28 countries and territories, 16 of which are first-time exhibitors. Given the ongoing travel restrictions, 82 galleries will be participating with a satellite booth and presenting their curated exhibition staffed by a local representative appointed by Art Basel.
Following last year’s rendition, the 2022 event will embrace a hybrid format, broadcasting the show floor to audiences worldwide via its digital initiative Art Basel Live in parallel to the physical show, which features Online Viewing Rooms, virtual walkthroughs, social media broadcasts, live-streamed conversations and lectures.
Expect an extravaganza of painting, sculpture, drawings, installation, photography, video and digital works showcasing the eclectic art scenes across Asia and beyond. Works created by established and emerging artists alike creating exciting juncture between pioneering 20th-century practices and cutting-edge inventions.
Some highlights include new works by seminal contemporary artists Zheng Guogu and Pak Sheung Chuen presented by Vitamin Creative Space and David Hockney’s monumental photographic drawing “Pictures at an Exhibition” presented by Gray. New to the Hong Kong show, Jahn und Jahn will present “Order and Signs,” showcasing visual works by Henri Michaux from the 1970s and 1980s.
This year’s “Insights” project will see the curated presentations of works by important artists from Asia from 16 galleries. These include A Thousand Plateaus Art Space’s presentation by Wang Chuan, which charts the artist’s creative evolution over the last 30 years, and James T. Hong’s dual-channel landscape film, presented by Empty Gallery, that juxtaposes imagery of sites from the historical Opium Wars with contemporary footage of the South China sea and Hong Kong’s skyline.
Meanwhile, “Discoveries” will focus on solo shows by emerging artists, featuring 18 galleries including newcomer Maia Contemporary, which will present a new series of paintings and sculptures by Cisco Jiménez, and Catinca Tabacaru displaying works by Surinamese artist Xavier Robles de Medina who is known for his rigorous monochrome paintings.
