This March, L’École Van Cleef & Arpels once again graced the Qube at PMQ with yet another opulent set-up, flying in 13 of its most esteemed professors from Paris to head this highly coveted two-week programme. We were lucky enough to take part in two courses: The Story of Talisman Jewels and Fascinating Diamond 2: Science and Gemology.
The former took us on a cross-cultural voyage through the symbolic meanings of gemstones, as well as the powers they are thought to have carried. Through videos and discussions, we dissected cultural beliefs, debunked myths, and delved into the motifs worn by figures from Elizabeth Taylor to Napoleon. One of the highlights of this particular course was when we were tasked to design our own personal talismans and explain their origins and meanings. I walked away from this class with a greater appreciation of what a talisman is, how they are used by different people for varying purposes, and how often they can be overlooked – especially in this day and age.
We ended our day with an intensive hands-on workshop studying the science and gemology of diamonds, starting with how its basic chemical composition creates unparalleled levels of hardness in the gemstone. Students were then set challenges to grade a range of stones on colour and clarity. Seasoned professors were on hand to check our work. Though a mere four hours by no means transforms students into experts, the courses served as the perfect taster for those considering working in the diamond industry professionally, or simply looking to expand their knowledge on this inimitable gemstone.
