Design is an expression of purpose, and it may (if it is good enough) later be judged as art,” said American designer and architect Charles Eames, who – together with his wife Ray – made numerous contributions to modern furniture. (The Eames Lounge Chair remains a design icon and an undeniable indicator of taste today.) The design pieces currently on display at Sotheby’s latest Hong Kong exhibition definitely exemplify this notion.
Showcasing furniture by masters of the mid century modern movement – Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, Jean Prouve and Charlotte Perriand – this debut exhibition illustrates how an innovative concept paired with careful craftsmanship can result in a thought-provoking piece – even if it’s a chair rather than a painting or sculpture.

Boomerang table by Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret
Some highlights of the exhibition include the Boomerang table and pair of office armchairs created by Le Corbusier and his cousin Jeanneret. Designed for an urban planning project aiming to transform the city of Chandigarh, India in the 1950s, these pieces are notable for their understated yet unique X, U and V shapes. Also don’t miss the cabinet by Prouve, which is made from aluminium and steel – then considered pioneering materials in the world of furnishings.
Masters of Design runs at Sotheby’s Hong Kong’s gallery until March 26.
