A former medical complex in Sāo Paulo is transformed into a luxury five-star getaway and the centrepiece of the Cidade Matarazzo luxury neighbourhood.
Founded in 1943, the Condesa Filomena Matarazzo Maternity Hospital in So Paulo delivered an estimated half million babies. The former medical complex is now rebuilt into a luxury five-star getaway and the centrepiece of the Cidade Matarazzo luxury neighbourhood, the brainchild of entrepreneur Alexandre Allard.
The hotel is a complex of elegantly preserved buildings from the early 20th century. The luxury hotel anchors this stylish mixed-use cultural destination, occupying one of the area’s few remaining historical landmarks.
As Rosewood's first resort in Latin America, this architectural masterpiece by Pritzker Prize-winner Jean Nouvel features 160 guest rooms, 100 apartments and an expansive vertical forest. Visionary creator Philippe Starck's interiors pay homage to Brazil with Oscar Niemeyer-inspired shapes and handcrafted details by 4,000 local artisans, while the landscapes by fellow AD100 Hall of Famer Louis Benech contrast with the Atlantic plantings of mature olive trees.
Brazil is known for its bursts of excitement and exuberance. That pride of place is evident in the presentation of 450 artworks by 57 Brazilians in the complex. Regional wildlife is the subject of Regina Silveira's lobby tapestries. Sandra Cinto created the custom green and white tiles that line the rooftop pool.
From the moment you arrive at the hotel, the rich local culture will sweep you off your feet. What adds to the magnificence of this hotel is that it tells the tale of Sāo Paulo in both broad strokes and fine details.
Architect Roberto Toffoli Simoens da Silva resurrected the 1922 Chapel of Santa Luzia, which has a Vik Muniz rose window. The building's original circular fenestration had previously been covered over, which was found during the restoration. Here, visitors will also hear wedding bells ringing. There is no better location than this to start a family.
