I’ve always found the process of layering different textures and images is intriguing and surprising. It is all about exaggeration, rather than perfection. My art never really advanced beyond primary school, and I now tend to just leave it to the pros. One of my favourite artists is Sammy Slabbinck, whose work combines modern and vintage elements. Slabbinck started collecting vintage magazines and books when he came across them at garage sales. He then began creating collages because, to him, they represented a feeling of complete freedom with no strings attached.
Slabbinck draws inspiration from the female body for many of his works. In The Big Push (2012), a vintage photo of a naked woman is used in such a way that it seemingly blends into the landscape. He’s also recently been dabbling in some stop motion work, too, taking his collaging to new places.
Below are some of his (and mine, too!) favourite pieces:
Going Nowhere (2013)
Do You Remember (2013)
The Big Push (2012)
Into the Wild (2013)
Mind the Beatles, Darling (2012)
