Steve Leung Design Group (SLD), an internationally renowned and award-winning architecture and interior design company, unveils Qeelin's highly anticipated flagship store in Tokyo's prestigious Ginza district.
Qeelin is a fine jewellery company established in 2004 in Hong Kong by Dennis Chan and Guillaume Brochard. The brand's products reflect mystical or superstitious symbols strongly embedded in Chinese culture.
Steve Leung, founder of SLD, worked with his talented design team led by Director of Design Mai Chongchaiyo, to design Qeelin's Tokyo flagship store. Its new flagship store, spanning five floors, is a stunning embodiment of its beautiful products and the rich cultural heritage of China, reinterpreted through a modern lens. It incorporates a colour palette of vibrant reds, symbolising luck and prosperity, alongside gold, historically associated with wealth, status and luxury.
The expertly crafted façade is a collaboration between SLD and Studio PDP. The captivating glass gradient transitions from black to red. Enhanced by the contribution of internationally acclaimed lighting designer Tino Kwan, the bold colour palette reflects Qeelin's brand identity while commanding attention from passersby. Prominently displayed on the façade are Qeelin's iconic logo – the silhouette of a gourd, an ancient Chinese charm (Wu Lou) symbolising abundance, good fortune and protection.
Stepping inside the store, the ground floor, which acts as an arrival area and general sales space, takes inspiration from contemporary Chinese courtyards. Intricate timber screens intertwined with black mirrors exude both elegance and warmth.
A unique floating cantilever display that evokes the imagery of a bamboo forest presents Qeelin's exquisite jewellery pieces. Complementing this element are Chinese ink mountain landscape paintings and gold-coloured carpets, paying homage to the revered ShanShui style of traditional Chinese art.
The first floor features an almost ethereal atmosphere, with reflective mirrors and rippling glass walls that mimic the fluid motion of water. Custom-designed geometrical cabinets, seemingly suspended in mid-air, have been thoughtfully arranged throughout the space and used as displays for Qeelin's exquisite masterpieces. The designer's creativity is evident in delightful surprises such as an extendable revolving display counter that brings to mind the versatility of a Swiss army knife, as well as magic mirrors and Wu Lou-inspired designs.
On the second floor, the VIP lounge awaits discerning guests with an opulent and tranquil atmosphere. The lounge, designed to feel like a serene bamboo courtyard, features bamboo curtains gently swaying and intimate tinted mirrors.
The Qeelin Flagship Store represents the successful collaboration between Qeelin and SLD. It reflects SLD's thoughtful design approach and attention to detail while capturing the essence of Qeelin's unique brand identity. By blending oriental cultural heritage with contemporary design, the store offers visitors a soothing and memorable experience.
