As summer winds down and the weather turns brisk and balmy, enjoy the autumn breezes at our favourite rooftop alfresco bars in Hong Kong, offering the ultimate, sky-high haven away from the frantic pace of the ever-pulsating city.
Overlooking Victoria Harbour is Skye, a bar and restaurant opening next week on the 27th floor of The Park Lane Hong Kong in the heart of Causeway Bay. With contemporary decor by internationally acclaimed Design Worldwide Partnership, the spacious area showcases the works of German Street artist, KEF!, infusing a chic and playful vibe into the space. Comprised of a main dining area, three private rooms and an airy outdoor deck with a distinctive, illuminated oblong bar, it spans 8,000sqft. The restaurant’s French cuisine is complemented by its bar’s bespoke and creatively presented cocktails.
Seafood Room (closed)
In addition to its extensive seafood specialty menu, Seafood Room—which opened in mid-April—features an alfresco rooftop lounge a floor above its dining area. To sate guests’ appetite visually as well as gastronomically, art pieces including the works of Takashi Murakami, American contemporary artist George Condo and Hollywood actor Adrien Brody are displayed throughout the two-storey space, which was designed by renowned Russian architect Natalia Belonogova of NB Studio Moscow. The rooftop is just as stunning as the interiors—enjoy the panoramic view of Victoria Harbour from the bar while sipping on a cocktail or two and sharing some shisha.
Salvatore at Maison Eight (closed)
Maison Eight is a wine-and-dine hub that comprises French restaurant Esmé, the world’s first Bollinger champagne room Le Club 1829, private events space The Ballroom, and—last but not least—alfresco terrace bar Salvatore. Boasting a 360-degree uninterrupted view of Hong Kong’s skyline, Salvatore at Maison Eight is an outdoor cocktail bar headed by Fabien Marcault, protégé of the legendary bartender Salvatore Calabrese. As the maestro’s first venture in Asia, the lounge features his signature cocktails along with some exclusive, Asia-influenced drinks, such as its Oriental Cappuccino, which is mixed with Chinese chestnuts and chai tea. Fabien also uses a modern and personal approach to the cocktails, taking guests’ special requests to create a cocktail tailor made to your liking.
Designed by award-winning design firm AB Concept, luxurious restaurant, lounge and club Ce La Vi was one of the most anticipated openings of last year. Located on the 25th floor of California Tower in Lan Kwai Fong, the space’s sleek interiors, featuring plenty of warm reds and dark wood, are sure to turn plenty of heads. But the club’s true highlight is found on the terrace – a Jacuzzi that sits in the centre of the modern yet comfortable seating. The view, the ever-present DJs spinning house music and decadent bites such as foie gras French toast and short ribs make for a perfect night out.
Ozone Sky Bar at the Ritz Carlton
At the dizzying 118th floor of the International Commerce Centre (ICC), Ozone is one of the highest bars in the world. That’s hardly its only claim to fame, though – the lounge and dining area’s décor features a razor-sharp, futuristic edge, with plenty of marble, deep blue tones and an edgy 3D honeycomb ceiling, all designed by Tokyo-based interior design firm Wonderwall. While the drinks may be on the pricey side, a bird’s-eye view of the city is more than worth shelling out a little extra.
Everyone knows that Lan Kwai Fong and Soho are always a party, but – little known fact – the eastern side of the island is just as hot. Perched on the top floor of East Hotel in Taikoo Place,Sugar is a perfect watering hole for after work drinks, offering both an indoor seating area with comfortable ottomans and couches and a spacious outdoor deck with a stunning harbour view. Cigars are available to smoke on the patio – just make sure to book in advance so you don’t end up stuck with an indoor standing table.
