Granted UNESCO World Heritage status in 2013, Japan’s Mount Fuji has long been a pilgrimage destination for travellers, and has inspired countless artists and poets with its peerless beauty.
Hoshino Resorts took this sacred site as its vantage point, creating a top-class resort in the natural grandeur of the national park. The concept revolves around encouraging visitors to embrace the great outdoors, combining traditional camping with luxury and comfort – think gourmet picnics, elegant minimalistic decor and personal Glamping Masters.
Tasked with the architecture of the Hoshinoya Fuji, Azuma Architect and Associates has created a stunning space that places the guest solidly within nature. The moment you enter the cabin, you’re met with a majestic view of beautiful Lake Kawaguchi and the magical mountain, displayed through an immense window that separates the bedroom and the balcony.
With the cabin’s minimalist design, the views envelop you and appear to be part of the room. Each balcony also features a sunken nook where a fire can be lit so guests can enjoy the tranquillity of nature within their own comfort zones.
The public areas are designed to bring guests closer to the gorgeous views and pristine forests. As you ascend the resort’s rise from the cabin, the first structure that comes into view is the beautiful roof truss of the dining hall, where lively chatter and the scent of sizzling food emanates. A short climb from here is the Cloud Terrace – a series of platforms connected with stairs that culminate at a small cafe and is also a prime spot for those morning stretching sessions.
The food options at Hoshinoya Fuji include grill-based fine dining, Dutch oven dinners and a scrumptious array of in-room dining delights. Whether it’s a lazy morning you hanker for, unwinding on your balcony and tucking into a decadent box-breakfast, or a subdued evening with some Japanese premium whisky and friends at the Fireplace Lounge Bar, you’ll feel transported and inspired.
Further your experience with a private canoe tour (pure serenity at its finest), a horseback ride through the expansive woods or the nature tour of the Jukai (Sea of Trees) that takes you through the forest and the lava cave. All the while, you’ll have the most epic view of Japan next to you.
