Since 1951, Helsinki-based design house Marimekko has captivated a legion of devotees, ranging from fashionistas to sophisticated homeowners, for its vibrantly hued fabrics and memorable original prints.
As one of the early pioneers of Scandinavian design, Marimekko is once again paving the way for a sustainable textile industry through a ground-breaking collaboration with Finnish fibre technology start-up Spinnova, which will see the development of luxurious fabrics made out of wood pulp sourced directly from forests in Finland.
The only company in the world able to convert pulp directly into textile fibre without any chemical solvents, Spinnova has developed a wood-based, highly durable fabric that’s designed to be reused, recycled and even composted at the end of its life, drastically reducing the product’s environmental footprint.
Together with Marimekko’s unmatched flair and artistic craftsmanship, an exclusive capsule collection incorporating the new material and Marimekko’s iconic Unikko floral print has just been released, featuring limited pieces such as tote bags, striped shirts and denim-like jackets, with plans to turn it into a permanent collection in the next two years.
