The benefits of travel are well documented: brainpower can be boosted by new experiences and fresh horizons. Travel not only broadens your perspective, but scientific studies show it also improves your cognitive health and inspires creativity. Designers are particularly receptive to their surroundings, constantly gathering ideas and influences – often subconsciously. They may find their journeys referenced in their work, and sometimes at the core of their aesthetic or the driving force behind their latest creations. We speak to five creatives across the globe about the destinations that inspire them in this exclusive web series.
Vivid, eclectic designs and an audacious personal style have catapulted Kelly Wearstler to the upper echelons of the global interior design elite. She divides her time between Malibu and Beverly Hills, where she lives with her husband and two sons. She says travel is her greatest inspiration, and she embraces everything from the exoticism of Indonesian islands to the cultural vibe of cities.
Amazing Architecture
My favourite cities for architecture are Paris, Barcelona, Brasilia, Istanbul and London. London has a striking mix of classic and modern architecture in a variety of material and styles, with so many architects from around the world living and working there.
Hotel Havens
The Nihiwatu resort on Sumba Island in Indonesia is one of my absolute favourites. I love designs that encapsulate a spirited sense of adventure without compromising on comfort. Every villa at Nihiwatu is uniquely designed and beautifully merges with the spectacular and soulful natural surroundings. It is the perfect balance of raw and refinement.
Stylish Sips
Wally’s in Beverly Hills has an exceptionally curated wine list and is renowned for its expertise in spirits and signature cocktails – they have an impressive tasting bar.

Culture Vultures
I make a point of keeping up with art openings or exhibitions wherever I travel, and carving out an afternoon to get lost in a museum is a must. My favourites include the Prado (pictured) and Thyssen museums in Madrid, the Tate Gallery in London, the Guggenheim in Venice and New York’s MoMA. Smaller art galleries and studios are also great for discovering local contemporary artists.

Favourite Finds
Great style has no price point and travelling is the best way to score interesting one-of-a-kind treasures. Many of my favourite pieces in my home come from markets I’ve stumbled upon while travelling – Paris has some of the best flea markets in the world.
Intrepid Inspiration
All travel broadens the mind and fuels creativity. Inspiration is everywhere, from an encounter in the natural world to graffiti art on a city street. I am an intuitive designer. Design, for me, is falling in love over and over again.

Dream Homes
I’d love to live in Paris. It truly is the epicentre of fashion, art and architecture. Creativity abounds throughout the city. It’s an inspirational place for modern design and classic architecture.
