Common Room offers a comprehensive design service, creating beautifully crafted interiors for discerning clients. The creative team is based in Hong Kong and led by design director Meng Jing. She draws inspiration from her expertise in vintage furniture and mid-century modern design, and is dedicated to building cosy, stylish spaces with soul.
Could you describe your design philosophy, and how it came about?
Our designs are often eclectic in style, curated with unexpected pairings of new and vintage pieces sourced from our collection of international resources and local craftsmen. We draw inspiration from each client’s unique aspirations and personality, challenging ourselves to create thoughtful homes that aren’t afraid to be lived in.
Which project(s) are you most proud of this year?
2024 was the Year of the Dragon, a popular time for young families. We welcomed many new babies among our clients this year, which brought us a great sense of accomplishment as we built homes for families to grow, flourish, and create memories together. It also prompted us to actively seek solutions for making homes more sustainable, eco-friendly, and forward-looking. One standout project involved designing homes for a family across four generations – we’ve already created spaces for the grandparents and parents in previous years, and now we're excited to design for the younger generation. It’s incredibly fulfilling to witness their growth and the trust they’ve placed in Common Room.
What's your go-to spot that inspires you the most creatively?
Recent inspirations include the lighting beam in Rosewood Beijing, a floor pattern in the Louvre, and a scene from the TV show Suits. It sounds ridiculous sometimes. More importantly, for me, is how I can capture these ideas and organise them into practical solutions.
What's next for your company?
On the residential front, Common Room will continue excelling in creating personalised spaces. We're also expanding into designing sustainable work environments focused on wellbeing and flexibility, adapting to today's evolving workplace needs. As a boutique interior design studio, we remain dedicated to offering bespoke solutions for discerning clients.
