A heavyweight in Hong Kong’s baking scene, Gregoire Michaud can boast of a 25-year-long career dealing with bread and pastries, including 8 years as the executive pastry chef of Four Seasons Hong Kong and five published cookbooks to his name. In January of this year, the Swiss native struck out with Bakehouse, his first bakery cafe in Wan Chai that serves artisanal croissants and sourdough loaves that quickly saw lines out the door upon its opening.
Outside of work, however, Gregoire’s tastes vary widely, from local cha chaan teng fare and Thai street food, to handmade pasta and Melbourne-style coffee. Keep reading for his favourite spots around the Wan Chai neighbourhood.
Sun King Yuen Curry Restaurant
After a long night of work at Bakehouse, Sun King Yuen, convenientely located nearby, serves a very good deep fried pork chop with curry sauce and rice. The curry sauce is mild and very satisfying for lunch!
20 Spring Garden Lane, Wan Chai
Wan Chai Wet Market
My favorite place to stroll very early in the morning with all the fresh fruits, vegetables, meat and seafood. I get my vitamin fix with fresh fruits and plenty of inspiration for my daily soup and future dishes and pastries.
258 Queen’s Rd East, Wan Chai
The Cupping Room
This has always been my go-to coffee and breakfast place in Wan Chai. I usually get a flat white, and scrambled eggs on sourdough.
32 Swatow St, Wan Chai
Pici
Mostly busy at lunch, but the wait is worth it. I am always confident in bringing my business partners there for lunch as the food has never let down my expectations in impressing my guests.
16 St Francis Yard, Wan Chai
Racha Moo Yang
Road side seating, nothing fancy, but great Thai food, especially after a long day work. Take away is also a great option there, with the excellent flavours of the spices and herbs of traditional Thai cuisine.
11 Luard Rd, Wan Chai
Wooloomooloo Rooftop Bar
Breathtaking view and friendly staff. I like going there with friends and family. It’s a fabulous place to unwind or to start a busy evening! It’s like sitting on top of Hong Kong, and the view of the city triggers reflections and dreams in myself.
