Lorène Faure and Kenny Kinugasa-Tsui met in 2008 and relocated to Hong Kong in 2013, where they founded their design practice, Bean Buro. The duo weave their cross-cultural backgrounds into works that blend French, Japanese, and Hong Kong flair. The firm offers comprehensive design services across luxury residential, commercial, hospitality, F&B, and retail sectors that stay true to their multicultural expertise.
Could you tell our readers about your firm?
Our creative vision is profoundly influenced by the rich tapestry of French, Japanese, and Hong Kong cultures, along with strong ties to the UK. This diverse heritage fuels our passion for cultural exchanges and enhances our creativity, allowing us to draw inspiration from both Asia and Europe to create unique and meaningful designs.
Our passion for drawing and innovative creative methodologies drives us to explore various artistic mediums. Each project is viewed as a narrative journey that delves into our clients' passions, ethos, and lifestyles, where we create designs that resonate deeply.
Nature is a continual source of inspiration for us and underpins our commitment to sustainability, health, and wellbeing. With our in-house WELL AP expertise, our studio is dedicated to creating spaces that promote holistic wellness.
Could you share your journey into the world of interior design/architecture?
Kinugasa-Tsui: My Japanese grandfather, a university professor; introduced me to the works of Tadao Ando, leaving a lasting impression. Driven by his passion for art and architecture, I attended the Bartlett School of Architecture, where I nurtured my enthusiasm through both practice and teaching at esteemed universities.
Faure: I grew up in a creative household where artistic expression was highly valued. I studied architecture at the École Spéciale d'Architecture, where I had the privilege of meeting my mentor, professor Sir Peter Cook. Recently, my passion for health and wellbeing led me to become WELL AP-certified, which has further enhanced the studio's expertise.
Which project(s) are you most proud of this year?
This year, our studio has strengthened our enduring relationships with clients such as Warner Music Group and Best World International, creating innovative workplace and retail spaces throughout Asia.
Meanwhile, we have undertaken exciting residential projects for private clients and broadened our scope to include more FF&E, styling, and art commissioning. We are also in the process of launching a furniture line, which is set to debut at Milan's upcoming Design Week.
Could you name a book, movie or music track that has significantly inspired your designs or art?
We have been profoundly influenced by professor Sir Peter Cook, particularly his philosophy regarding drawing and architecture. A book that has significantly shaped our own philosophy is "Drawing: The Motive Force of Architecture", in which Cook discusses the pivotal role of drawing in the architectural process.
What's next in the pipeline?
We are expanding our network across Asia and Europe while fostering new relationships. In Hong Kong, our residential development project with Henderson is set to commence construction soon, and we are eager to see the results.
Additionally, we are embarking on some exciting residential duplex projects and collaborating with hotel groups on styling and accessorising. The outlook for 2025 is very promising. As part of our ongoing efforts, we are committed to integrating more sustainable and wellbeing-driven approaches into all our projects.
Furthermore, we are considering publishing a book that showcases our work and philosophies.
