Could you describe your design philosophy, and how it came about?

At In-between Architects we focus on the functionality on par with the aesthetic value. I always say that I want a space to be “forgiving”, so it can be lived in and age gracefully, which inherently makes it more sustainable. I always work to create a sense of balance in a room, not to be eye-catching or dramatic, but to keep things simple. Space is like a canvas and as designers we are creating a base for which people can add their own accents of loved items, whether it be art or furniture.

Which project(s) are you most proud of this year?

Without doubt, we would have to select our recently completed luxury mountain resort project Yada Xishan “The Unbound Collection” by Hyatt in Yixing Jiangsu, a city that is famous for their heritage, including the bamboo forest and the art of making teapots. Located at the ecological park of Yixing Province, the design concept is to invite guests to connect with nature, an escape in tranquil seclusion. In-between architects designed the 99 rooms using the idea of a mountain teahouse as a metaphor.

What’s your go-to spot that inspires you the most creatively?

I visited the Shoden-ji Temple in Kyoto recently, it encompasses the philosophy of Zen perfectly. I was told David Bowie was brought to tears while immersing himself in the tranquillity of this minimalist garden. I could spend hours in this ancient temple watching the changing light fall across the contemplative garden and the borrowed mountain scenery behind it. Inspiration comes naturally when I’m surrounded by the beauty of nature.

What next for your company?

Our company's future plans involve expanding our projects beyond Hong Kong and China, as we venture into new territories across Southeast Asia and Europe. Art has also been at the forefront of our developments. Since 2022, we have partnered with curator Christina Brandt Jensen from After Sunset, known for her innovative focus on art and heritage. Together, we have curated a series of art and architecture exhibitions in Hong Kong, Nanjing, Kuala Lumpur, and soon in Seoul! This has given us a chance to be playful and creative, finding new inspiration and ideas by working outside of our usual practice. This collaboration also brings art into our design projects, infusing them with an added touch of elegance and warmth. It is meaningful to us to feature the work of local artists and we believe our clients enjoy having a deeper connection to the visuals in their space. Art and design have a common language and we enjoy the way they can dance together.
