Could you describe your design philosophy, and how it came about?
Design is never about transient superficial beauty. We believe simplicity is the best manifestation of perfection; with our special attention to detailing and carefully selected materials, our designs are about uplifting the spirit of the place and evoking emotions to the residents. I am greatly influenced by two architects. Peter Zumthor, a Swiss architect who crafts beautifully emotional spaces with the bold use of materials and light. The other architect that I really admire is Luis Barragán, the Mexican architect who used light and colour to engender warmth and reflection. He published an eloquent manifesto in the 1950s on the topic of emotional architecture. These architects inspire me to always rethink function, and to question and challenge the usual way one would use a space. Why should a certain design element be there, or why should it be eliminated?
Emotion plays an important role in the design process. We have to fulfil certain functions, which are the soto meet the practical needs of our clients and to also work with the constraints of the site. The atmosphere that we look to create, which is less tangible, is our answer to the client’s emotional needs based on their personality, interests and habits.
Which project(s) are you most proud of this year?
We are blessed that we have completed quite a few projects this year and some of them are yet to be photographed, and I cannot wait to share them with everyone soon. One of them is the show flat for Chinachem group. They have given us so much freehand on theconcept, thebudgetandthestyling.Wetookcuesfromnature, translating the shadow of tree leaves and waves of water to create a poised, yet relaxing home. Our design embraces a restrained soft colour palette with tactile richness, harmoniously blending with the natural surroundings and capturing the tranquillity of the sunset. We wanted to evoke an artisanal touch and a sense of capaciousness. Every element is thoughtfully curated to enhance the emotions and experiences within the space. It’s a subtle home to enjoy, a haven to be envied.
What's your go-to spot that inspires you the most creatively?
It’s quite embarrassing. My go-to spot for inspiration is bathing. The ritual of cleansing can relax my muscles and mind, and it helps to invite thoughts to flow more freely. The solitude can also provide clarity and motivation. Therefore, the bathroom is always my favourite spot at home, in hotels or in my projects.
What's next for your company?
I’m really pleased with our current position, and I look forward to tackling new and challenging projects in different genres.
