Otherwhere studio is an innovative interior design firm in Hong Kong, founded by Udo Lam and Frankie Chao, who embrace new challenges with open hearts and a passion for solving problems as a team. They believe that space has no visible boundaries, and people’s feelings have no limits. Their designs integrate with the natural environment, making good use of nature to explore the inner side of life.
Could you describe your design philosophy, and how it came about?
Otherwhere studio brings together human emotion and lifestyle in designing spaces. Our design integrates the natural environment with aesthetic details to create spaces that enhance the quality of life. Our aim in starting Otherwhere was to bring a new way of living – one we craved – to people through our designs. The spaces we create peacefully connect with people's minds. We believe that people living in a concrete jungle with a hectic and fast-paced lifestyle deserve a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere in which to explore the inner side of life.
Which project(s) are you most proud of this year?
This year, we are especially proud of our project, "Runway". This unique home design emphasises the harmonious coexistence of residents and their feline companions. Our design philosophy for Runway focused on creating an environment where both cats and humans can thrive together. The space features enriching climbing structures and resting areas that cater to the natural instincts of cats, allowing them to roam freely and play. This thoughtful integration not only enhances the living experience for the cats, but also brings joy and warmth to the residents, fostering a deep bond between them.
What's your go-to spot that inspires you the most creatively?
One of our favourite spots in Hong Kong that inspires us creatively is Discovery Bay. The natural beauty of the area, with its serene landscapes and calming environment, aligns perfectly with our design philosophy of integrating the natural world into our projects. This tranquil setting allows us to reflect on the importance of nature in our design work and fuels our passion for creating spaces that connect deeply with the human experience.
What's next for your company?
Looking ahead, Otherwhere Studio aims to expand its portfolio by exploring new avenues in both residential and commercial design. We plan to take on more innovative projects that challenge the conventional boundaries of space and design.
