At Cloud Mansion in Hangzhou, GFD Studio swaps sharp lines for soft thresholds, turning a typical sales centre into a calm in-between zone between city rush and home life.
Cloud Mansion sits along one of Hangzhou’s busy urban spines, but it is not interested in putting on a show. Instead, GFD Studio treats this 1,100-square-metre experience centre for Guofeng Group as a quiet “in-between”, a place where your pace drops before you step into the residential world beyond.
Rather than stacking functions room by room, the designers lay out two storylines, one above ground and one below, both written as a slow walk. You arrive along a clean axis in dark stone, with timber and soft ceiling light warming the tone as you move in. The reception is tucked further back, so the first impression is not a counter, but an overall shift in light, texture and tempo.
In the lobby lounge, that formality loosens. A rounded bar in green stone anchors the space like an island, floating lights above and a series of arches pulling the courtyard stone-scape inside. Level changes are dissolved into wide steps, low seating and gentle shifts in flooring, so the sunken area feels like a natural dip in the route.
Water becomes the quiet connector: the central reflecting pool links the residents’ lounge and gym, always close, never intrusive. Low bookshelves, curved sofas and round tables blur direction in the lounge, inviting visitors to sit, stay, and linger without being told where to go. The gym answers the courtyard in a more direct way, lining equipment along full-height glazing and stretching the ceiling with linear lights. Here, workouts play out against a backdrop of trees and stone rather than mirrors, reinforcing the project’s calm, almost club-like mood.
Downstairs, that mood deepens. A subtle turn opens onto a taller foyer, grounded by a low circular pendant and a gentle progression of textures instead of dramatic contrast. A vaulted corridor leads towards the model display, set so you can walk around it, with a sunken courtyard of rocks and planting just beyond the glass. The architecture exists in miniature and at 1:1 at the same time, making decisions feel more intuitive than hard-sell.
Around this core, a stone-clad water bar with rounded corners, loosely spaced negotiation seats and a cocooned private dining room continue to soften edges. At the very end, an outdoor lounge is left deliberately undefined, like the last pause in a sentence. It underlines the project’s central idea: when boundaries are softened, a sales gallery can feel less scripted, more like a quiet members’ club where future residents can project their own lives in.
