Joyce Wang Studio once again designs Club Bâtard’s newest outpost in Shanghai.
After selling out memberships in Hong Kong within months of its 2024 launch, the private wine club is expanding to Cha House at HKRI Taikoo Hui, taking over a rare three-storey heritage villa in the heart of Jing’an.

The design, led by Hong Kong-based Joyce Wang Studio, reimagines the standalone residence as a members’ clubhouse that feels more like a private home than a traditional venue. Expect a series of intimate, layered spaces rather than a single open floor: rooms unfold one after another, with wine cellars woven into the journey so members can browse, select, and settle in at their own pace.

That sense of movement is central to the experience. Instead of separating storage and dining, Club Bâtard collapses the two—allowing members to pick bottles directly from the cellar and bring them straight to the table, all at retail pricing. It’s a model that proved hugely popular in Hong Kong, and one that translates naturally into the spatial design here.

Food, as ever, plays a key supporting role. The Shanghai outpost introduces five distinct concepts, each with its own atmosphere. There’s Blanc, a contemporary French dining room led by a three-Michelin-star chef, and The Garden, an alfresco terrace with Riviera-inspired ease. Cha Xuan focuses on refined Cantonese cuisine, while Cabotte runs from breakfast through to late-night drinks. Rounding things out is OBE, an intimate whisky bar designed as a quiet, low-lit retreat.

Set within one of Shanghai’s most dynamic retail and lifestyle hubs, the project balances heritage architecture with a distinctly modern members’ experience—less about spectacle, more about access, ease, and well-considered design.

Club Bâtard Shanghai is slated to open later this year, with memberships now open at a one-time joining fee of CNY 100,000 and a monthly subscription of CNY 1,250.
