In a busy city like Hong Kong, public art is more than something nice to look at—it connects people with the spaces around them.
Please Be Seated, a large public art piece by British artist and designer Paul Cocksedge, does exactly that. Built around the idea of “sit down anytime, anywhere,” it encourages people to slow down and take a break. Visitors can find their own spot to rest between the flowing waves of wood, breaking the usual barrier between art and the public.
This special Hong Kong edition is made entirely from sustainably sourced wood. Its curved, wave-like form is inspired by the energy and rhythm of city life. The design offers comfortable places to sit and space to walk through, while the warm texture of the wood adds a calm, natural touch to the busy business district.
Earlier versions of Please Be Seated were first shown in Mainland China in 2020, touring Swire Properties’ Taikoo malls in Chengdu, Guangzhou, Shanghai, and Beijing. The piece drew strong public interest for its interactive design.
The Hong Kong version now has a permanent home in Taikoo Park at Taikoo Place. It gives city dwellers a peaceful spot to pause and enjoy art—a lively and welcoming part of the community.
