Christie’s Geneva has pinned a CHF200,000–400,000 estimate on a small platinum Audemars Piguet from the 1930s.
A platinum chronograph from the 1930s that wears like a slice of Art Deco architecture on the wrist – that’s the quiet pull of this early Audemars Piguet (AP) heading to Christie’s Geneva. The “Coussin Tortue” monopusher will appear in this spring’s “Rare Watches” sale with an estimate of CHF 200,000–400,000 (around HK$1.96–3.92 million), a punchy number that makes more sense once you see where it sits in AP’s history.
This vintage AP belongs to the brand’s first generation of chronograph wristwatches. Around 1930, when complicated watchmaking was still dominated by pocket watches, AP quietly produced six experimental chronograph movements for the wrist, of which only three were actually cased and sold that decade. The watch now consigned to Christie’s, numbered 41849, comes from that founding batch, and current research suggests only two examples from this group are known to survive – it’s not one reference among many, it’s effectively the reference.
Under the dial, it stays serious. This is a monopusher chronograph, with start, stop and reset all run off a single crown‑mounted button – a very clean interface hiding a very compact, complex hand‑wound movement that modern large‑scale watchmaking would rarely attempt.
Its story is just as tight. The watch has spent almost ninety years in one family, moving quietly from the original owner through several generations before sale, in a market increasingly suspicious of heavy restoration and fuzzy provenance.
All of that means the estimate is more than a price for a small platinum watch; it reflects extreme rarity, clear history and a design‑driven early AP chronograph that appeals both to the eye and to collectors thinking decades ahead.
