Winning Taiwanese Installation Lifts a Plaza Floor Into the Air

Taiwanese studio Shape Blank Atelier has won this years X-site competition by lifting the plaza floor into the air.

The installation, dubbed “The Jade: Plaza Calls to Plaza”, uses inverted mirrored surfaces to create a disorienting spatial illusion. A thin plane floats overhead without walls or columns. Look up and you see the ground; look down and you see the same.

The anchor-free structure hints at subterranean spaces below while creating an unobstructed gathering zone. In summer, this hovering plane becomes a shaded pavilion. The jury praised the work for reinterpreting the architectural boundary of the entrance with concise yet powerful gestures.

The X-site program was established in 2014 and presents one temporary installation annually on the museums outdoor plaza. The program uses an open call to invite architectural and artistic teams to submit experimental proposals.
