International speakers from the architecture and design community, including Marcel Wanders, Arik Levy, Aric Chen, Jaime Havon, Jérôme Sans, and Shanghai’s very own Neri & Hu, have been confirmed to be taking part in talks and debates. This year the theme will be Transition and Transformation, studying the maturing of the Chinese design industry.
As Design Shanghai is just around the corner, we asked this year’s Maison & Object Asia Designers of the Year, Lyndon Neri and Rossanna Hu of Neri & Hu, to share their favourite hot spots in their home town.
What’s a hip and upcoming neighbourhood?
The former French Concession area in general from Wukang Road, Fuxing Road and An Fu road for the little local shops. It’s an extremely pedestrian friendly part of the city.
What is your favourite restaurant, and what is the best dish there?
A Niang Mian Guan (36 Sinan Road Shanghai) has the best Shanghai-style noodles. It’s literally a hole in the wall but you don’t need to bring your own chopsticks. There’s also Jesse Restaurant (41 Tianping Road) for the best Shanghai cuisine. We go to the original one in the former French concession near our office.
Where do you shop for furnishings?
Other than Design Republic (511 Jiangning Lu, near Kanding Lu, Jingan district, tel 6176 7088;DESIGNREPUBLIC.COM), we go to antique stores.
What’s your favourite building in town?
The Wukang Mansion, formerly known as the Normandie Apartments (1850 Huaihai Middle Road, Xuhui) designed by Hungarian architect Lazlo Hudec is one of our favorite because it combines a sense of scale and domesticity, and yet it possesses a grand stature.
